Saskatchewan Burrowing Owls
Burrowing owls have been on COSEWIC's Endangered Species List for Saskatchewan since 1995. Their numbers have been diminishing due to pesticide use, vehicular death, predator strain, the cycle of prey species, migration stress, and most importantly, destruction of their habitat in Saskatchewan - native prairie. The Saskatchewan Burrowing Owl Interpretive Centre (SBOIC) opened on the Moose Jaw Exhibition Grounds in 1997. SBOIC is at the center of the Burrowing Owl's range on the Canadian Plains. Hours of Operation Victoria Day Weekend (May) - Labour Day Weekend (September) 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. 6 days a week (closed MONDAYS) The centre is not open to the public during the fall and winter months, but arrangements can be made for small groups to see the owls, by appointment only. When visiting the Interpretive Centre visitors are encouraged to explore the giant burrow, view the life-like predator/prey display and ask questions of an interpretive staff member. A visit to SBOIC is not complete until you meet an owl! During a visit you can be assured to see at least 13 owls. We have 10 captive owls that live at the Centre all year and 3 educational ambassadors. Between May and September visitors have the chance to spot one of the wild owls that nest in the racetrack beside the Centre. The costs of maintaining owls in captivity add up quickly. It costs approximately $200/owl/year in food alone! SBOIC is a non-government, non-profit, charitable organization. Our work is funded entirely through donations and grants. Donations are tax deductible. Donations from conservation organizations, corporate sponsors, local business, and the public enable the Centre to continue providing educational opportunities to concerned citizens. Donations should be made payable to the City of Moose Jaw and sent to: SBOIC 250 Thatcher Drive East Moose Jaw, SK S6J 1L7 Or you can join our "Adopt an Owl" program.
