The Ash Plant Bug, tropidosteptes amoenus, feeds by puncturing leaf surfaces of the ash leaf with its piercing sucking mouthparts. All species of ash can is susceptible, however, green ash seems to be most severely affected. There are two generations of the ash plant bug per year. The eggs over winter underneath tree bark and the nymphs emerge in the spring. The first generation of adults occurs in early June while the second generation emerges in late summer. The second generation of adults will survive on the tree until frost. Adult ash plant bugs can range in color from green to black. They are about 5 mm long and 2 mm wide. Pink markings are frequently seen on live bugs. The homeowner can maintain control by spraying the tree with water, shaking the tree to remove the nymphs. Or by using chemical control. The homeowner may use insecticidal soap, Malathion, or Sevin. Homeowners may not apply any form of chemical control to city owned trees without the consent of the City of Moose Jaw.
